Apan Mudra (Mudra of Purification)

How to perform:
- Join the tips of the Middle and Ring fingers to the tip of the Thumb.
- The other fingers are kept straight and relaxed.
- Place the palms, face up, on your knees or thighs.
- Keep your spine and head straight, shoulders relaxed.
- Perform the mudra with both hands.
Benefits of Apan Mudra :-
- Apan mudra is a combination of Akash Vardhak and Prithvi Vardhak mudras.
- Thus it increases the Space Element and the Earth Element.
- It also increases "Vata" and "Kapha" doshas, thus reducing the Pitta dosha.
- Apan mudra facilitates the expulsion of waste from the body and keeps the body clean.
- Apan mudra is a combination of the agni, akash and prithvi elements.
- Combination of these elements improves digestion, and provision of calcium and other vitamins.
- It is a very helpful mudra for anuria – absence or obstruction of urine.
- It also helps with constipation, flatulence, piles.
- Absence of sweat.
- Stomach problems such a stomach pain, vomiting, hiccups and restlessness.

Soothes toothache. Practice this mudra daily for 10 minutes to keep your teeth healthy.

Diabetes can be controlled by a disciplined practice of this mudra for 50 minutes followed by Pran mudra for 15 minutes. Diabetics should perform these mudras lifelong to keep diabetes in control.

Migraine can be cured with apana mudra and gyan mudra each performed for half an hour.

Avoid this mudra during pregnancy, as it can induce labour.

However, for a painless easy delivery, this mudra can be practiced daily for 10 minutes a month before the due date.
- You can also practice this mudra if the delivery is delayed.
Precaution :
- Persons having a Vata + Kapha mix constitution should perform this in moderation.
- Avoid performing during pregnancy as it can induce labour.
