The Sharira Mudras

  • Sharira means 'body'.
  • The three Sharira Mudras channel breath to three main regions of the body – upper, middle, and lower.
  • Also activate breathing in three main regions of the Lungs: upper, middle, and lower regions.
  • Activate each of these areas individually.
  • The final mudra - Purna Svara mudra brings about full yogic breathing – activating all areas of the torso and lungs.
  • Each Mudra is symbolically related to the three shariras – the three dimensions of our being:
      ▪Sthula Sharira (physical body)
      ▪Sukshma Sharira (subtle body)
      ▪Karana Sharira (casual body)
  • These mudras are used to prepare the body structurally to receive the breath physically.
  • Perform slowly, taking your time.
  • Do not force the body and mind when taking the position of any mudra.
  • Yoga postures are not just a physical position. They are a firm and pleasant mental attitude.
  • Remain steady and relaxed – you should be comfortable to remain in the pose for some time.
  • Practice each sharira mudra for 3 to 4 minutes to open each breathing space to the breath before proceeding to the next mudra.
  • You can practice each mudra by itself but in the beginning, it is recommended to practice the entire set in one sitting.
  • This will provide you with a contrast of sensations that will allow you to see the effect of each mudra more clearly.
