Varun Mudra (Jal Mudra or Bhudi Mudra)

How to perform :

  1. Join the tip of the small finger to the tip of the Thumb.
  2. The other fingers are kept straight and relaxed.
  3. Place the palms, face-up, on your knees or thighs.
  4. Keep your spine and head straight, shoulders relaxed.
  5. Perform the mudra with both hands.

Benefits of Varun Mudra:

  • Varun Mudra is also knows as the Jal Mudra or Bhudi Mudra
  • It increases the Jal Element in the body.
  • Water is a component of the two doshas Pitta and Kapha. The practice of Jal Vardhak mudra will increase "Pitta" and "Kapha" doshas.
  • People with a pronounced "Pitta" + "Kapha" constitution should perform this Mudra in moderation.
  • People with a "Vata" Constitution can get immense benefits from this mudra.
  • Almost 70 percent of the body is water. When the Varun mudra is formed, it helps to keep the water and fluid balance in the body.
  • It affects water metabolism.
  • Regular practice of this mudra keeps the skin soft, supple, and smooth.
  • Other skin disorders are cured - such as itching, blemishes, eczema, psoriasis, herpes, etc.
  • Rough & Itchy skin during winters is relieved by this mudra.
  • In summers, generally, we experience diarrhea, loose motions, or dysentery. After 3-4 loose motions, we start feeling very weak. This is due to the loss of water and fluids from the body. We can also get dehydrated, which can become dangerous. To prevent dehydration, perform the Varun mudra each time one gets a loose motion. This will prevent deficiency of water in the body and prevent weakness. It will keep us energetic. This mudra is a lifesaver during diarrhea.
  • In urinary and kidney diseases, when a person has frequent urination, Varun mudra can give relief.
  • One feels very thirsty during high fever, and lips become dry. Lips can also become cracked. Perform this mudra for relief.
  • Perform the Varun mudra if the taste of the mouth becomes bitter or changes due to fever or any other reason.
  • This mudra will also help in dry and burning eyes.
  • Our blood becomes thick due to High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, or High Cholesterol. Varun mudra will help to normalize the thickness of the blood, to remove impurities, and to improve the quality of the blood. 
  • Varun Mudra will keep the blood circulation healthy, it will prevent blood-related disorders, the fluidity of the blood will be maintained and oxygen and prana or life force will keep flowing unhindered throughout the body through the blood.
  • Varun mudra is especially good for the summer season. It will prevent excessive thirst, keep us safe from sunstroke and provide coolness to the body.
  • A deficiency of water in the body can cause stiff muscles and cramps. This mudra will provide flexibility to the muscles.
  • Perform the Varun mudra for cure from pimples, acne, boils, etc.
  • In diseases caused due to the increase of "Pitta" such as hyper-acidity, this mudra can be very helpful.
  • It helps to re-hydrate cells, tissues, muscles, skin, joints, cartilage, etc.
  • The element water is associated with taste. This mudra is thus helpful in overcoming disorders like loss of taste and dryness of the mouth.
  • Use this mudra for overcoming the following disorders :
    • Dryness of digestive tract 
    • Indigestion
    • Constipation (Dry Stools)
    • Dry cough
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Anemia
    • Scanty urination
    • Scanty periods
    • Loss of taste, tongue disorders
    • Burns
    • Dryness in the body
    • Impurities present in the blood
    • It preserves youthfulness
    • If a person falls unconscious due to sunstroke, accident, or being in an overcrowded place, he can be brought to consciousness by rubbing the tips of this thumbs and the tips of the little fingers.
    Precaution : 
    People having water retention in their bodies or people with "Pitta" + "Kapha" constitution should avoid performing this Mudra or perform moderately.
