  • Blocked Nose ( as known as Congestion ) is when your nose becomes stuffed up and inflamed. Minor illnesses are the most common causes of nasal congestion. For instance, a cold, the flu, and sinus infections can all cause stuffy noses. Illness-related congestion usually improves within one week.

Symptoms of a blocked nose:

  • A blocked nose or nasal congestion is when you wake up with catarrh dripping down the back of your throat, you find it difficult to breathe quietly, you are unable to exercise without struggling for breath and you feel as if you are always clearing your throat.

Tips to help make breathing through the nose easier:

  • Dairy products should be avoided or their intake reduced as they promote mucous production. Products such as buttermilk, cream cheese, and yogurt are the exception.
  • Include foods in your diet that are rich in vitamins and minerals and avoid eating heavy meals at night.
  • Vitamin C is especially important for extra resistance, as is sufficient rest, sleep, and relaxation.
  • Avoid very cold drinks as they can encourage the formation and retention of phlegm.
  • Reduce exposure to cigarette smoke and household chemicals.
  • Use steam inhalation to help loosen mucous.

Treatment for congestion:

  • After your doctor has determined the cause of chronic nasal congestion, they can recommend a treatment plan. Treatment plans often include over-the-counter or prescription medication to resolve or alleviate symptoms.

Medications used to treat nasal congestion include:

  • Oral antihistamines to treat allergies, such as Claritin and cetirizine (Zyrtec)
  • nasal sprays that contain antihistamines, such as azelastine(Astelin, Astepro)
  • nasal steroids, such as mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler) or fluticasone(Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA)
  • antibiotics
  • over-the-counter or prescription-strength decongestants.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids and staying well-hydrated thins mucus in the nasal passages, making it easier for congested sinuses to drain and relieve the pressure from a stuffy nose. Warm liquids help quickly open up congested sinuses, so sip on steamy cups of tea as well as plain water.
